This week's auctions

| | Comments (3)

Seems there's some sort of conspiracy afoot amongst the auction houses... to hold their spring photography auctions in the same week - two on the same day, in fact. It makes one wonder.

The Christie's auction is on Tuesday, Apr. 26th. The Phillips' auction follows on Wednesday, April 27th. (Items are also biddable on eBay, oddly enough, as per View from the Edge....) And Sotheby's auction is also on Wednesday. All three auctions cover the 20th century primarily, from early to contemporary works.

It's no conspiracy. It's standard practice. The Contemporary Art auctions are all the same three days (May 11-13). It gives buyers, especially those from outside the state (or country) the ability to do one-stop shopping, and to pool together the "auction madness" publicity.

it's a conspiracy of convenience, maybe. They've always grouped their shows by genre/department, capitalizing on bringing all the collectors in a field in town.

I'm sure there's no conspiracy or collusion beyond that. Right? Except for that giant pricefixing thing, of course...

I was trying to make a joke... I suspected it was some sort of buyer convenience, but if I were them, after what happened, I'd do my best to avoid even a whiff of collusion.
